Every available dose of Levitra, starting from the lowest dose of Levitra 5 mg up to Levitra 60 contains Vardenafil HCl. Vardenafil HCl is a nearly colorless, solid substance that has a molecular weight of 579.1 g/mol and a solubility of 0.11 mg/mL in the water base. Levitra tablets are supplied as orange, round, film-coated tablets with ‘BAYER’ cross debossed on one side. Whereas the respective dose is debossed on the other side of each pill.
Pharmacology of Levitra 5 mg Pills
The erection of the penis is a hemodynamic process, which is based on the relaxation of the smooth muscles of the cavernous body and the arterioles located in it. During any sexual stimulation, Nitric oxide (NO) is released from the nerve endings of an individual’s body. This activates the enzyme Guanylate Cyclase, which leads to an increase in the content of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in the cavernous bodies.
As a result, the smooth muscles are relaxed, increasing blood flow to the penis. The level of cGMP is regulated, by the synthesis of guanylate cyclase and by hydrolysis through phosphodiesterases (PDE). The best-known PDE is a cGMP-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). Pharmacodynamics of Levitra 5 mg
After oral administration, Levitra 5 mg is rapidly absorbed. When taken on an empty stomach, an early peak maximum concentration can be reached after 15 minutes, however, the maximum concentration is observed after 60 minutes (from 30 to 120 minutes) in most cases. Due to the significant first-pass effects, the recommended dose ranges between 5 mg to 20 mg.
When Levitra (vardenafil) is taken with a meal containing a large amount of fat, the absorption rate decreases with an increase in the time to reach the maximum concentration in the bloodstream. When taken with normal food containing no more than 30% fat, the pharmacokinetic parameters of the Levitra drug do not change. Based on these data, Levitra 5 mg (vardenafil) can be administered regardless of food intake.
The total clearance time of Levitra 5 mg medicine from an individual’s system may be about 4-5 hours. After oral administration, vardenafil in the form of metabolites is excreted mainly by the gastrointestinal tract, to a lesser extent by the kidneys via urine and feces.

Dosage and Proper Administration
The recommended dose is one tablet of Levitra 10 mg to be taken approximately 30-60 minutes before having sexual activities or intercourse. Depending on the effectiveness and tolerability of an individual, the Levitra dose may be increased to one tablet of Levitra 20 mg or reduced to 5 mg per day. However, the maximum recommended dose is 20 mg once daily. A single dose of Levita is enough for one day.
Special Levitra Dosage
Levitra medication may not be suitable for all age groups. Especially, children and teens below the age of 18 years are prohibited to use Levitra 5 mg. Similarly, elders above 65 years should also avoid using Levitra medicine. In this age group, dose adjustment of the drug is not required. However, depending on the individual’s tolerance, the dose that might be increased to the maximum permissible limit of 20 mg should be carefully analyzed.
Patients with mild hepatic impairment and moderate hepatic impairment, are initially prescribed a dose of Levitra 5 mg daily. On the other hand, patients with mild or moderate renal impairment should consult with their concerned doctors for Levitra dosage.
In patients with severe renal impairment, an initial dose of Levitra 5 mg should be considered first. Depending on the effectiveness and tolerability of the treatment procedure, the dose may be increased up to 10 mg or 20 mg.
Other Drug’s Effects on Levitra 5 mg
Several drugs and substances may interact with Levitra to produce new side effects or worsen the side effects. Hence, Levita 5 mg pills should not be taken along with:
- Erythromycin, Clarithromycin
- Ketoconazole, Itraconazole
- Indinavir, Ritonavir, Atazanavir
- Grapefruit juice
- Alcohol, etc.
Levitra can reduce the effect of Ritonavir and Indinavir significantly. Levitra 5 mg can also increase the heart rate and exaggerate blood pressure, lowering the effects of nitrates.
In patients with severe chest pain, Levitra can cause chest pain by increasing heart rate and lowering blood pressure. Levitra also exaggerates the blood pressure-lowering effects of alpha-blockers.
